The City of Apopka celebrated a significant step toward fostering inclusivity with the groundbreaking ceremony for a new inclusive playground at the Northwest Recreation Complex on January 24, 2025. This event marked a commitment to creating a space where children of all abilities can play and grow together.
“The City is excited to build this playground which will provide an inclusive environment for children of all abilities to play and grow together. It will be a great amenity for our families and the community as a whole,” said Mayor Nelson.
The inclusive playground is designed to cater to children with diverse abilities, featuring accessible equipment such as Zip-Krooz, Go-Rounds, swings of varying designs, and sensory gardens. Additionally, the site will include accessible pathways and modernized infrastructure with a new exit roadway, extra parking, and sidewalks to improve accessibility for all visitors (1).

The collaborative effort between the City of Apopka and the local non-profit organization Unlimited Capabilities has been pivotal in bringing this project to fruition. Unlimited Capabilities contributed $110,000 toward the playground, with $100,000 of that amount donated by the Halliday Foundation, a long-time supporter of the non-profit’s mission (2).

This initiative embodies the city’s dedication to supporting the needs of all residents. As the community gathered at the south end of the recreation complex—near the baseball fields and Wolf Lake Middle School—to commemorate the groundbreaking, the sense of unity and shared purpose was evident. The playground’s construction symbolizes an investment in Apopka’s families and sets a precedent for inclusivity in public spaces (3).

This project aligns with Apopka’s vision of creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all residents. Once completed, the inclusive playground will be a testament to the city’s determination to build a community where every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their abilities.
